Sri Lanka Forced Marriage Discussions | May 2026

What a wonderful way to spend the day with Sisterhood Initiative and Nabeela Iqbal to travel through rain and wind to Puttalam to meet with the MWDT and to get to listen to the truly inspiring Ms Juwairiya Mohideen.

Her words, her strength and her smile will stay with me. Despite extraordinary challenges that she has overcome for 35 years, it was an emotional moment when she responded that ‘yes things are better, things are moving in the right direction’. It is so easy to lose sight of the ripple effect of life improving.

Sharing an umbrella, sharing a snack, sharing a 7 hour car ride, this is how we build the bonds to strengthen resolve and to change. Thank you to The Zubin Foundation for opening the door.

Sala Sihombing

On 13th May, the Sisterhood Initiative team visited Puttalam alongside Ms. Sala Sihombing, Chair of the Forced Marriage Committee of The Zubin Foundation to engage in discussions with the Muslim Women’s Development Trust (MWDT).
