About Reflective Supervision

What is it?

Reflective supervision is an hour for you to reflect on your practice in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space to support you to build and maintain a sustainable practice. Working with a supervisor should feel like someone is walking alongside you to support you on bad days and good days.

Family lawyers work in a stressful field with clients who may be traumatised or in distress.  The timelines and the stakes for family law work can lead to challenges for family lawyers.  Navigating a sustainable career can feel like a lonely and impossible path.

Reflective supervision is an innovative process which has been used in the United Kingdom for decades to provide family lawyers with independent, confidential and non-judgmental support.

What is discussed?

In general, family lawyers come to reflective supervision once a month and share with the supervisor what is most pressing.  Topics which may be discussed in reflective supervision include:

  • challenges dealing with a specific case / client
  • difficulties navigating practice – whether because the lawyer is junior / senior
  • concerns about the emotional / physical toll of work
  • goals about growing a practice and advancing in seniority and responsibility
  • dreams about how to build and maintain a sustainable practice

If a supervisee brings to supervision something which may require additional mental health support the supervisor may assist with a referral.

For individuals

For individuals, this may be organised directly with the supervisor. The commitment is meeting once a month and is intended to be a long term supportive relationship for your career.

For firms

For firms, a firm may purchase supervision for a number of individual lawyers. The experience for the lawyers would be the same, in that they would meet one on one with the supervisor.  These sessions are confidential, therefore any information shared during the session remains confidential to the supervisee.
