How it works

Introducing the inaugural Hong Kong MFDR Competition, created to give future lawyers practical experience and insights with mediation with a Family Law context. Each 2-student team will act as the client and lawyer in simulated settings that resemble mediator-assisted financial dispute resolution (MFDR in financial proceedings in a divorce, to compete for the best negotiator. The MFDR Competition is open to all current LLB / JD / PCLL students attending Hong Kong universities.

Each team will benefit from the experience of a seasoned family practitioner, who will mentor and guide you and share with you invaluable practical experiences. This is a unique opportunity to experience the thrill and challenge of family law and mediation advocacy. Participating students will learn:

• The relevant family law and procedures for the role-play scenarios
• How to prepare to negotiate in MFDR
• How to prepare a client for the MFDR
• How to advocate for your client in MFDR

Competition Dates

• Applications open: 1 September, 2024
• Applications close: 1 November, 2024
• Successful teams notified: 15 November, 2024
• Preliminary rounds: 5 March / 7 March / 9 March, 2025
• Semi-finals: 13 March, 2025
• Finals: 15 March, 2025

Prizes

• 1st Prize: HKD3,000 and 2 x 2-week internship at Tanner de Witt, Solicitors
• 2nd Prize: HKD2,000 and 2 x 2-week internship at Tanner de Witt, Solicitors
• 3rd Prize: HKD1,000
• Special Award: Best Advocate
